As always, maintaining peace needed to be conducted with respect and attention. Which was why the Goddess of Wisdom and War-craft amongst other things often contacted her Uncles, Poseidon and Hades, or their consorts. It would be impolite to just venture to their realms to speak and so it was that Athena contacted them with Iris messages. Of course, keeping in contact did not always guarantee peace, but the amount of conflict between the brothers and the gods was lessened. Often, it also was a good idea to keep in contact with the minor gods, although they were not much of a threat, peace was generally prefered.
Still, the threat was always there, that the Big three would have conflict. Their demigod children were enough to cause a World War and it was generally best to take the precaution to avoid something like that happening with the Gods. Even if that did mean giving up time to talk to the other Gods. To be honest, it wasn't very easy to keep a good conversation with Poseidon, due to the little conflict they had had over the naming of Athenas, but during the Trojan war, they had both sided with the Greeks so the conversation could be held without too much problem.
Of course, there was always a chance that Poseidon's consort, Amphitrite would answer the Iris message, or even that both were out and Athena would merely leave a polite message with one of the Cyclopses or Merepeople to say that she had attempted to contact them to see how existance was treating them, in the sea. As always, one of Athena's owls remained by her side, instead of remaining on the ground, as it often did, the owl had chosen to perch on her shoulder. It was approaching dusk and the bird was feeling more active. It would not be long until it flew off to hunt. And hopefully her Iris message would be picked up as soon.
